Weekend ending

Sunset
Sunset from our room

I don’t understand all I know about my wifi here in the hotel. Seems to me, when you connect to the wifi, you get an IP Address. Also seems to me that one of the addresses works much better than others. So, you have to turn off the airport and connect over and over until you happen to get the “good” address. But, I might be wrong.

Our weekend is over. Carlton goes back to “work” tomorrow. Oh yes, our most beloved surf contest went off today. The Eddie ran today and a guy from California won. $55,ooo. Not bad for a day of surfing. 30,000 people showed up to watch. Which is really hard to imagine. Lots of folk must have called in “sick”. And since everyone had to get to the contest by car – some must have called in “stuck in traffic”. Anyhow, this is the first time since 2004 that the waves were big enough for the contest.

I tried out the wetsuit. It is great. Love it. I float better and don’t get cold. Also provides some protection against jelly fish. Not to mention that  what is essentially a black girdle is very slimming!

OOPS, we have people on our floor. Since we arrived November 7, we have been the only people on our floor. Heck, several nights we were the only guests in our building. (Some hotel staff live in the building) Well, I do want the hotel to stay in business – so, I’ll allow people on our floor.

Weak wifi today

The wifi connection is flakey today. For some reason, the iPod works better. Guess the mobile content uses less bandwidth.

Sunday but not much sun or fun

Body Boarders 2
More surfers from Honl's yesterday.

We had a shortage of sun today. But, I needed a day off from glorious weather.

Today’s non-fun was provided by the heretofore faithful Airness. I turned it on about mid-day and it started fussing that the computer date was earlier than the actual date. And all sorts of processes that I didn’t recognize started whining about lack of access to this or that. And when I tried to get to the internet Safari and Firefox both fussed about “certificate” problems.

Now, if this were a PC – I’d suspect a virus. But, hey this is a Mac. Macs “just work”. This was not “just working”. And, I don’t have a clue where to start trying to get the bad boy going again. Ok. Manually set the date and time. Turn off the wireless. Power down and make coffee. Drink coffee. Restart. Well, that stopped all the fussing. A little research and I discover that some evil power screwed up a bunch of the file permissions. I pushed the “fix-em” button and everything seems to be better. But, I am not a happy person since I haven’t a clue as to what happened.

Surf’s Up

Body Boarders
Surf's up at Honl's

We had surf again today. Lots of surf for our surf deprived island. Where I thought that the surfers would be today was outside my walking limit. But, the body boarders were out in force about one mile down the road from our hotel. Well within my walking range.

Every now and again something comes along that is too good to be free. Readability is one of those things. It is a little javascript bookmarklet that converts what you are trying to read into something you actually can read. It works great with Safari and Firefox.

If you read stuff online  – check it out. http://lab.arc90.com/experiments/readability/

Readability is especially nice for those of us with “mature” eyes.

Dinner (which due to Carlton’s work schedule is at 3:15) was meatballs, broccoli, and rice. Sandwiches on tap for later this evening.

food?

Today the food fairy left a fund raiser bento lunch. Not the best bento ever. Maybe one of the worse bento boxes ever. Some days free food is worth what it costs. But, the rice was good. Food fairy also delivered some Xmas cookies which seemed to be chocolate covered All Bran.

But, let us have a nice postcardy picture.

Sun and Surf
A fine sunny day with sweet waves

We are still having wave action. And, it seems like the waves will be around until Monday. So, the wetsuit remains high and dry.

xmas

Xmas 02
some of the balls from our hotel tree

The ocean was too lumpy today for snorkeling. So, I just swam some “laps” in the lagoon.

The food fairy provided meat balls, star fruit and some oranges. So, we had meatballs and broccoli, rice, avocado and oranges for lunch. Sandwiches on tap for dinner.

Starting to get itchy feets again. Instead of checking travel books out of the library, I got a book called Don’t Go There! On my bucket list is “Go Around the World”. This might be the year. Don’t think I can get Carlton to go. For general peace of mind – I’ll lay out maybe a three month trip – with three one month breaks. Travel of one month. Return to Arlington for one month. Do again twice more. Not exactly the perfect around the world trip – but, better than waiting until I am a widow to take off. After all – Nobody is promised tomorrow. If I make it to widowhood – then I can take a boat around the world. In keeping with my plan to just move onto a cruise ship vice into an old folks home.

making myself @ home

Screenshot

I seem to be making myself at home – not in Kona – but in the new computer.

Reference the junky desktop. I try to keep it nice and clean. I would love to have a zen-like desk top (and a zen-like apartment) but it isn’t going to happen.

I am starting to think-Mac more often. The Mac OS is not perfect. But it is stable. I find that more often than not Safari is my browser of choice. Not a preference – I prefer Firefox, but Safari is quicker. Quicker is better.

Did my part to help the Chinese economy. I bought a wetsuit. That which is called a “Shorty Spring Suit” in surfing circles. But, it might be a few days before I give it a test. Big surf is supposed to be coming in – and big surf is not good for snorkeling.

Speaking of big surf – it might be big enough to “run the Eddie”. The Eddie Aikau is a big surf contest that is only run  seven times since 1985, because 30 foot waves are required.  The most recent contest  was in December 2004, when waves reached 30 to 50 feet. The contest only invites 24 big-wave riders and no jet ski tow in allowed. The Eddie – Check it out. The Eddie is not held on our island – but we follow it on TV. If it happens.

housewifery today

Closed Halloween Day
Closed Halloween Day for Personal Reasons. Say what????

The cameras stayed in the drawer today. Today was devoted to all things housewifey.

Today I did the laundry, defrosted the fridge and cut Carlton’s hair. Also made a grocery run.

Then doing my part for the economy – went window shopping for a wetsuit. Strange to say losing 20 pounds of blubber has made snorkeling a chilly process. Problem with a wetsuit is that it is just another thing to keep track of and lug around.

Mr C suggested that I could acquire a used wetsuit from a dive shop. I pointed out that people pee in wetsuits. Especially rental wetsuits. He agreed that a used wetsuit is a bad idea.

Xmas

Seriously tired tonight. Only in Kona would you get roped into helping decorate your hotel’s tree. It is huge or so it seemed. No picture yet. The Airness does not wish to play with the hotel wireless tonight so I am using the iPod. Any Apple port in a storm.

It begining to look a lot like xmas

Xmas
Xmas Light

A do nothing day.

Lunch was mashed potatoes and gravy with meatballs (no surprise there), cranberry sauce, avocado. The food fairy graced us with cookies today. But, I am making cheese sandwiches, with pineapple and bananas for dinner. The cookies will be dessert.

Fish Again

Juvenile Yellowtail Coris
Juvenile Yellowtail Coris

Took the One Buck Bus 5 miles south this morning for some photography. I came back with some rather nice fishy fotos. Which I will have all processed, culled and cataloged before the day is over. I am trying to do something about my mountain of digital images. At least I am trying to keep it from getting worse. I came home with 140 photos and now have only 38.

Meatballs again today. This time I nuked up some apples and frozen meatballs. With cheese on top. Also avocado. The food fairy provided a bunch of desserts and some bananas. Is bananas and chocolate cake with peanut butter icing dinner? It might be in my house today.

Continuing with revisiting the post-apocalyptic genre – I just started on Earth Abides, 1949 George Stewart. I read it when I was a kid and still remember parts of it. In the 50’s we  worried about being nuked. But in this book, we were all taken out by a world-wide killer measles epidemic. What you worry about is never what gets you. Something will always get you. But, it isn’t what you worried about.

Fish today

Lavender Tangs
Lavender Tangs

I went fishing today. Fish photographing that is.

There is a problem with my wonderful Panasonic L1 – it makes me unhappy with the quality of my underwater images. I just have to deal with it.

There is a problem with the current economy that I haven’t heard mentioned. Fixed income investment income sucks. Half of my bond portfolio is being called next month – assuming I reinvest in bonds – my income will be cut in half. Surely this is a serious topic in “Senior Living” areas. My mother’s mantra was “Don’t Spend the Principal”. I think she had a “DSP” monogrammed on her bath towels.

I had an idea yesterday – an alternative to moving into a little old ladies home – Why not move onto a cruise ship? After all – cruise ships transport the “newly wed, nearly dead, and over fed” to our shores every week. And the free shuttle bus takes passengers to Wal Mart. Sounds better than moving into a Sunrise Senor Living Facility.

Back to eating meatballs. I have LOTS of avocado. So, I made sort of avocado and meatball salad for lunch. It was pretty good.
