It’s Spring today

Found a star magnolia outside the apartment building

It was warm and sunny enough for me to go outside. The first thing I found was a little star magnolia tree in bloom. It was warm enough for a nice walk down to Clarendon. Home of the Apple Store, the Container Store, Crate and Barrel, Whole Foods and other urban delights. I went into Whole Food and got lunch. Managed to avoid all the other shopping opportunities. For now. A visit to the Apple Store will happen soon.

Still waiting to see what happens to Japan’s nuclear power plants. I think the nuclear power will be a total nonstarter from now on. I am not sure what we will use for electricity in the future. But, I don’t think it will come from nuclear. Maybe we will have to use less electricity.

Everyone in Hawaii is upset because the GOP Slash and Burn Budget slashes funding for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Understandably, no one else seems to care or even know that there is a Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. I guess “they” figure The Weather Channel can handle the job.

The Last Boat Day???

Last look over the railing.

Kona. As we were heading out of the room for the last time – I took this picture. The question is –  Was this the Last Boat? The pier was condemned by the Coast Guard today. Hopefully, they’ll send divers down and decide that it is safe. But, it would be sort of fun it the pier were removed. I think that the nice wide beach that used to be there would come back.

Japan. I am glad I went last year. I feel sure that at least one town we visited might be gone. With some grief I realized when it was reported that two trains just vanished off the tracks in Miyaji Prefecture that the teenage person and I had been on that train. And, I do hope that they can get the reactors under shut down before anything worse happens.

The Sendai I Remember

Ghost Buddha in Sendai

Japan: On last summer’s Japan adventure – the teenage person and I started our journey in Sendai. If you have to get a big earthquake or a tsunami – hope you are in Japan.

Hawaii: Last year the tsunami was a non-event. This year, in our town, the tsunami was an event. Not an event that makes the national news – but this year’s event flooded Carlton’s Palace and destroyed the Palace Caretaker’s house.

@home 9:00pm est

home, and in best archy and mehitabel fashion. no capitals. because one hand is busy eating a turkey wrap from the deli downstairs. The other hand is drinking a blue moon beer that the beer fairy left in my fridge. thank you beer fairy.

Waiting in Seattle

The travel goddess smiled on us. Will be going from Seattle to Detroit to DC – no extra charges. Should be home by bedtime tonight.

Sleepless in Seattle

Completely screwed. Our flight to Seattle was 2 hours late. We missed our fight to the east coast. And, since yours truly booked two separate trips to save money. Alaska Airlines says we got you to Seattle. We don’t care what you do now. And, Delta says “Hey, it isn’t our fault you missed the flight”. So sorry.

We decamped to a friendly Holiday Inn. Will come up with Plan X tomorrow.

Last Post from Kona until next winter

Practice Safe Swimming

Every morning for the last four months I have taken my sorry lazy ass and a cup of coffee outside and watched this life jacketed dog go for a bracing (and long) morning swim. Today, I picked the camera, zoomed out to 300 mm and snapped a picture of the dog heading back to the beach. The dog usually goes out with a woman – who does not use a life jacket.

Carlton came home with a lime this morning – figured it was a sign that we should have a last meal of fish. Got a pound of mako shark. So, we feasted on shark, rice, and pineapple. Tomorrow we’ll be on the plane – we will feast on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I refuse to spend money on airline food.

Happy Birthday

Humuhumunukanukaapua'a - Picasso Trigger Fish.

67 today. Put my photo scanning project in mothballs until next winter. I did about 2,200 images. Washed the clothes that are staying behind. Decided that I’ll give up my short-shorts before I turn 70. The short-shorts stay here in Hawaii where it is OK for old women to wear really short shorts. But, 70 is pushing it for micro shorts, even in Hawaii.

Our local volcano is still showing off. http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/NCcam/ This sort of thing happens every once in a while and usually only lasts a day or two. But, it is a volcano. One never knows.

The Last Sunday

Tiny Bubbles

Yesterday was a rainy and internetless day. So, I ticked off several items from my going home 2do list.

Fire and Ice – yesterday and today.

On top of Mauna Kea – http://www.jach.hawaii.edu/jac-bin/irtvidWe had snow.

And, our local volcano started spitting out lava – to go with the vog – late yesterday afternoon. http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/NCcam/

Both of these events are  very temporary in nature and might be gone by the time you look. Or it might be dark, foggy or voggy.

Had our Last Supper at noon today – fish, rice, tomatoes and avocado. We are now in salad and sandwich mode.

Those of you who drive cars – our gas costs a tad over four dollars a gallon.

How Many Pictures of Yellowtangs…

Yellowtangs, Goldring Surgeonfish, Yellowtail Coris

How many pictures of yellowtangs do I need? A lot fewer than I have that is for sure.

Had a strange morning. One of the local homeless guys invited me out to breakfast this morning. His treat. He had the “special” and two bottles of beer. I had french toast and about four cups of fine Kona coffee. And, I think we both had a good time. Think about it. A homeless man bought me breakfast. There must be a lesson here for me.

Then I went off and scanned more photos.

Tomorrow – I begin serious going back home prep. I think it might be rainy. Rainy would keep me in the room. Which might help with the sorting, boxing, shipping, packing, tossing…

The sun came up this morning

This morning - sunrise

We rarely have a sunrise worth getting up for on this side of the island. A combination of  geography and vog, I think. The sun just appears. No fiery preview. But, this morning – a sunrise.

Today I did going back home chores. Returned books to the library, went to WalMart for cheap underdrawers, to the drug store for my favorite coconut oil. Plus the normal treks to farm market and grocery.

The new iPad. I thought I would be wanting one. But, I am not. This is subject to change when I get back home and visit the Apple Store.

Another thing I am not interested in is the NFL/players lockout. The Millionaires vs The Billionaires. Give me a break. It is as silly as the daughter of she who must not be mentioned “writing” a book.

Fish

Yellow Tangs and Yellow Phase Trumpet Fish

One week from now – we’ll be halfway back to Arlington. Just about ready to get on a plane heading from Seattle to Atlanta. I really hate the airlines.

But, before I complain too much… I am very old. I remember flying across the Atlantic on a plane with propellers. I remember crossing the Atlantic on a boat. I remember when a ticket on every airline  was the same high price. Really crappy routing is the cost of “free” enterprise and the cheapest possible ticket.
