Mother’s Day Miscellany

We brunched.

It rained last night, so after lunch, I figured it would be good to book some weeding time.

And what to my surprise – overnight “my” peonies started opening. They aren’t really “my” peonies. I am just their current caretaker. But, I did stake them up and will get them a shot of fertilizer.  Think the first massive weed removal process is done. Now, it is sort of wait and see what blooms and what doesn’t.

The garden box is doing fine.

And, since I am an old Park Service person  and we did a season a Volcano NP. Let us look back to May of 1924 when Madam Pele was kicking up things  inKīlauea . During that cycle lava invaded the water table with explosive consequences. That is a concern this time as well.

[While this photo label indicates the time as 09:13 that is the time that this explosive sequence begins. Based on other photos taken the same day and the Record Book notations it appears more likely that the actual time of the photo was towards the end of the explosions, somewhere around 09:20.This Tai Sing Loo image, featured in the Honolulu Star Bulletin of May 26, 1924. Caption: “The crowd of visitors off the Haleakala and Matsonia Saturday morning witnessing an eruption from in front of the Volcano House. They were warned subsequently by Roy H. Finch, in charge of the observatory, that it was unwise to remain there.” ]

Note that park visitors were better dressed but not necessarily smarter than today’s visitors.
