Don’t know why it took me a week to realize that I can set the camera on the balcony rail and get the same shot every time. Still not much fall. This is looking south.
And for something totally different – tweaked B/W looking east.
Washington Monument and US Capital
It is good to be up top of the trees. These images were with the cheap little point and shooter. Panasonic ZS3.
If I use the $300 point and shoot or the DSLR with the lens that costs as much as a car shouldn’t matter for photos at this size and resolution. Which is good I guess. Except it is hard to explain to non-photographers just why it is that you MUST have a lens that weights a pound and costs more than your first new car.
I was going to go vote for the good guys when I finished up volunteering today – but – I was overcome by fatigue – allergy induced I presume. I am rather like McClellan’s horses – what exactly have I done that fatigues anything? But, I will go vote. I think there must be a republican running for our congressional seat. I want to believe that he/she is a mild mannered rational intelligent human person. But, in case he/she is a teapothead – our democrat who always wins deserves a vote – just in case. Come election day. I’ll be in Hawai’i. My old polling place was the rich old folks retirement home next door to our condo. That was the whole entire precinct. New precinct votes a couple of blocks down the street at the law school. The old folks used to serve coffee and cookies. Bet the law school doesn’t.
Still no signs of cheery red leaves. The leaves have 3 weeks to change before we leave.
The family foundation is going to make a grant to the church across the street. St George. Of the Episcopal flavor. They provide “sack lunches” to anyone who comes to get one every weekday. No religion. Just food. They seem to have no expenses except for the food. It is very modest. Like Melinda Gates, I like to see where my money is going. And, like Melinda, I like to get good value. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation just has more zeros than the Bethany/Combs Lagniappe Fund – lots more zeros.
Speaking of Bill Gates. Imagine, being one of the richest men on the planet and having to use a Zune and not an iPod.
What is the Masonic Memorial? Well, it is actually “The George Washington Masonic National Memorial”. It was constructed during the 1920’s. And, it looks like the Alexandria Lighthouse. The one in Egypt. ca 250BC.
Those abominable people from the Westboro Baptist Church – I guess I have to defend their right to be really really rude. No, I don’t have to “defend” their right. The most I can muster is a mild agreement that they have a 1st amendment right to be assholes.
Here is a suggestion. The press stops covering the Westboro Church activities. The motorcycle groups continue their coverage of the Westboro Church activities. And, the IRS investigate the tax returns of the Westboro Church. What can you say about folk who can not spell borough?
On the other hand – how about Donald Trump – considering a run for the presidency in 2012?
Day 3 doesn’t look much different from Day 1, does it?
What does look different is this year’s political campaign. Can not recall any candidate ever saying “I am not a witch”. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding I was not in Salem in 1692. Someone might have said it then – but I don’t think the residents of Salem had elections. And they sure wouldn’t have let Christine O’Donnell run for anything – being neither male nor land owner.
Carlton had the tooth pulled today. He seems to be doing pretty good. So far.
Coming of Fall, Masonic Memorial from the front porch
It is time for a real honest to goodness 3rd party. Face it, the Democrats made almost no visible progress during the last 2 years. Oh, things would have been worse without the Democrats – the horror of Sarah Palin was averted for openers.
No matter what the “rank and file” teapotheads think – their spontaneous movement is financed by a few hugely rich fat ass old white men. And, their so called program – makes no sense. Oh, lets cut taxes, especially for the hugely rich, and not cut defense, homeland security, or medicare and social security for us old dudes – and everything will be fine…
The next session of congress will be a giant circular firing squad.
So, by 2012 – we should be able to see that the Democrats and whatever flavor of Republicans are just too entrenched in either insanity of self preservation to lead. It is time for a meaningful 3rd party. With a leader who will speak the truths that we all know – but fear to say. Raise my taxes. Cut my pork. Ask me to sacrifice for the good of the next generation. Fix my roads. Expand public transportation. Take better care of those who need care. Stop spending my money on the “drug war”. Just declare victory and leave. That goes for Afganistan too. Remember Afganistan is the country that took down the Evil Empire.
Find sunny early fall day today. It 4 weeks from today we’ll be flying to Kona – which doesn’t seem like a good idea today. But, in four weeks, winter will be just around the corner and my tan will have faded and I’ll be ready for some surf.
I had enough miles to get us to Kona for free. Will have to pay our way back home. But, that will be in 2011.
Spent this rainy day taking care of my computers. I have 3 computers, 2 of them dual boot. So, 5 operating systems need periodic housekeeping.
Then, I just happened to check on frequent flyer seats for November – no joy. But, there were to seats and sweet connections on Oct 30. So, Oct 30 it is.
Yesterday, I walked to the volunteer job. I usually ride the bus and walk home. It is 1.8 miles each way. Anyhow, my “to work” walk took me past this festive yard sign. But, actually, booze is the first thing ditched when I am dieting.
The diet has been going on for a week now. One of the offending pounds is gone. Two more to go. Pesky three pounds. Carlton can lose three pounds by giving up jelly on his afternoon monster muffin snack. No one ever said life is fair.
“They” promised us huge amounts of rain tomorrow.
Is anyone besides me sad about the death – or maybe suicide – of Xmarks – that fine crossbrowser, crossplatform, bookmark sync system?
I know this smiling kid. I have eaten Thanksgiving dinner at his house. I know his mother. She was the Matron of Honor at my oh so formal wedding years ago. My only thought was “How must Camille feel about this?” Carlton says that she must feel better than Cliff – because at least Mother’s care is being considered.
