Just a nice lazy winter day in Hawai’i. Still amazed at how wonderful the air is now that the volcano has stopped active eruption. It had been going on since 1983. We sort of took it for granted. There was always “red” lava somewhere and the air was nearly always crappy. Carlton would have loved the new improved air. Everyone does. Well, except for parts of the tourism industry.

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.
