9 years of asylum living

Nine years at The Asylum. (A friend needed vertical photos of real not stock old people. This is what I came up with.)

Did nothing at all today. Nothing. Nada. Zero. Zilch. But, I didn’t kill anyone. And Mai Tais were $3.50 at Happy Hour this afternoon. So, it’s all good.

I really did nothing at all today. That’s pathetic. Maybe I’ll do better tomorrow.

Nice sunny late spring day.

Today’s thrift shop score. Early 21st Century Prada Nylon Crossbody Bag.

Rarely do you score big at Goodwill. (1) they are smart enough to recognize a Prada bag – even an olive drab one – when on arrives at the donation center and (2) if Goodwill misses it – the eBay resellers will swoop in on it like the vultures they are.

But, there it was. I am 90% sure it is authentic. And if it’s not it’s a damn good copy. And it is surely worth the $4.99 that I paid for it.

That was today’s adventure. And no, I didn’t need another little purse. But, I know I’ll use this one because it’s the right size and very light. And, it’s Prada.

Nice rainy day

Used my last 3 sheets of exquisite paper today.

I made 3 cranes today. Out of my very best paper. It’s time to use the good stuff. Now, I just may have to go to Japan to get more really fine paper. Yeah, I know I could order some. But, what’s the fun in that?

And what happened to the paper that was 1/32 inch off-square? Well, it was bound like a book, so, I put it in our Little Library. If nothing else, someone will get a cool notepad.

Home – OK, What now?

Ray the Rosemary plant has never been so lush and healthy looking.

On the other hand…

Phlomis russeliana is not looking too good. Only time will tell.

I know it’s too early to give up on this plant. But?

Finished up all the chores that accumulated while I was wandering around. Time to plan the next escape. Switzerland? Singapore? Kyoto? All three?

No good deed goes unpunished. I bought 3 packages of origami paper in LA. Because I like to support small businesses that sell origami paper. 2 packages are fine. More than fine. Excellent actually. The 3rd and most expensive package is crap.

It’s nice paper. But it’s not perfectly square. So, it’s crap.

And, it was my fault. The paper was made in China. It was packaged in England. Chinese paper is always questionable. I know that.

This model uses rather a lot of glue. I was able to use the crap paper to make it. But, I see no reason to do anything with the new crap paper other than put it into paper recycling.

This isn’t an earth-shaking problem. Just annoying. How could I have been stupid enough to buy Chinese paper packaged in England in Los Angeles?

Home – Day 1

Cinco de Mayo Rose.

Back at the Old Bat’s Cave. Busy today. Doing things that need doing, paying,  reviewing, organizing, saving, shredding, tossing, etc.

But, the weather was nice so I got ample steps and aerobics in. And, every time my watch said “Step away from the computer”, I did.

Tomorrow is another catchup day.

Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. Just playing.

Panama Canal Trip – Day 18 – Day Last

Santo Domingo Pueblo, New Mexico. (Moving Train Window Shot)
It must be great to have a built-in phone shelf!
Facing future.

Back at the Old Bat’s Cave.

Got off the train at 1:10 this afternoon and walked into the OBC at 2:11. Not too shabby. That was 2 metro trains and 1 metro bus. And $1.

And what did I do when I got home? Very little. Watered my orchids, unpacked, washed all the clothes, picked up my mail, took a shower. Oh and backed up my computer. Now I am waiting on dinner. Brekkie was light and long ago.

I have to work on a report for the hospital and check my snail mail and various accounts. However, I’m feeling a bit fatigued from traveling. Therefore, I have postponed all the “important” tasks that require active cognitive abilities until tomorrow.

The trip was about 7,800 miles.

Panama Canal Trip Day 17

Made it onto my train from Chicago to DC with 15 minutes to spare. The train from LA was 3.5 hours late. We are leaving on time. Next stop. DC. Then The Asylum. Time to plan the next escape.

The Twilight Zone

Just finished dinner. Pretty good chicken enchiladas and a couple of beers. And I must take some time to reflect. I have had the greatest life. Good health, adventures, enough heart breaks to keep it real.

Panama Canal Trip – Day 16

New Mexico

Just starting through New Mexico. New Mexico is big and Amtrak is slow so NM takes all day.

Albuquerque

We seem to be stuck in the middle of New Mexico. And we are about 2.5 hours late. They just announced that we are waiting for a commuter train to pass us. And that should be in about 20 minutes. Amtrak has to yield to every other train.

When we do get going, we will be in no cell service zone and then it will be time for the G4 geomagnetic storm. So, time to nap.
Ps. Even more mistyping than usual today. Blame the phone.

Panama Canal Trip – Day 15

Off to a fine start. The bus stop was easy to find and it was clear which side of the street I needed to be on.

Wasn’t sure I would be able to put up any photos. But, snail WiFi isn’t the worst thing that can happen.

I have nothing but good things to say for LA Metro. They delivered me from San Pedro Cruise Port to LA Union Station in about an hour for 75 cents. Well, I had to pay a dollar because I didn’t have three quarters.

And at the Train Station the LA Metro information person gave me some suggestions of places to go. And another nice LA Metro person sold me a “temporary senior citizen card”. That cost me $2.50. It allowed me to ride all over on buses and the subway for 35 cents a ride.

Today I road 4 buses and 2 subways for $3.50. (Uber would have cost $165 plus tip to get me from the ship to the train.) And, I walked 6.5 miles. Enjoyed my very long layover in LA.  It’s sort of a whatever happened was what I planned thing.

Interesting billboards.
Eat. Because after Sunday brekkie, it’s back to Asylum gruel. (Grand Central Market)
Hot and expensive – Grand Central Market.

Will be getting on the train in a couple of hours. Getting a coffee and reading for a while. I have worn my little old lady self out.

Panama Canal Trip – Day 14

It is a weird day on the Island Princess.

Last day on board. And it’s very chilly.

Maybe the cruise is detouring to Alaska today.
Books are pouring back into the library. Guess people are lightening up. I talked to a couple who had 14 suitcases. They did the round-the-world thing. But still, 14?
There is a laundry room on most decks. You don’t need to bring 125 panties.
You have no idea how tempting this is.
And there were cakes today.
Cheese Cake?

Honestly, the desserts on the ship looked better than they tasted. Which I am guessing was a good thing because I had enough temptation with the scones and clotted cream. Every afternoon at three.

Packing up time. If it doesn’t warm up, I’ll have to hit a thrift shop tomorrow for a sweater!
Like this traveler, this ship is showing her years. But, we both made it. So far. Nobody is promised tomorrow.

Tomorrow the Southwest Chief. Leaving LA at 6PM. I am supposed to be off the boat at 7AM. That gives me 11 hours to get to the train station. And the train station is within walking distance of Tokyo Town and ramen.

Panama Canal Trip – Day 13

Some views from my 7 mile walkabout Puerto Vallarta yesterday.
Felt like I should go in and stock up.
Nice rocky beach
The taggers need practice.
Wall Art.
Well off the tourist track market.
Frigate Bird – honest, This is the end of my bad bird photography! Promise.
I was happy to see the ship outside the bus window. My Spanish needs work so I was not  100% sure I was on the correct bus. And yes, I was perfectly safe on the public bus.
If you decide to ride out an unfortunate turn of events in Puerto Vallarta (the Orange Clown winning in November for example)  – there is a Walmart and Sam’s Club.

The photos are all sorted. The weather has turned much cooler. The entire ship has a sort of final-inning feel to it. Guests are talking about packing. Some of the crew members are getting off in LA for extended home leave. The crew/vendors on board are working overtime to sell us things we don’t need.

An advantage of OLD is I realize how little stuff I need. I need more time and more good health. But not more stuff.

I am not going to address packing until after tea time tomorrow. I have to be out of my room by 7:15 AM on Thursday. I think I have the LA bus system figured out well enough to get to the train station. My train doesn’t leave until 6PM,  assuming it is on time. So, there is zero rush. And that is good.

Panama Canal Trip – Day 12

You might want to consider Puerto Vallarta if the Orange Clown wins in November.

I am feeling rather smug with myself. I walked 7 miles and then took the public bus back to the ship. As a result, I am rather tired. But, we have two sea days for me to rest up. The captain just said we depart soon and the ship will be going “flat out” at 20 knots (whatever that means) north to LA.

Loads of interesting public art in Puerto Vallarta. (Also frigate birds.)
Your average cruise ship passenger

More tomorrow. I am having an early dinner. And an early to bed.

Been reading Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rick Asian Trilogy. I “found” them in my Kindle library. I bought them while Carlton was sick, dying, and newly dead. And, I had lost my ability to read. According to my insane record keeping, I spent $22 for the 3 books. Well, I am glad I did because they are fantastic cruise reading.

DINNER!
