It’s a lovely day, but…

From today's trek home from the office.
From today’s trek home from the office.

It is a lovely day weatherwise, but I am just feeling a little droopy and tired and every one of my 70 years. I even processed that fine pink flower with a very dark tone.

But, at the volunteer job, I have finished creating some online forms so our applicants can, if they choose, fill out our paperwork before they get to our office. Hospitals have lots of paperwork. My new system went into alpha testing this morning. That means, if our receptionist thinks the person on the phone making an appointment to see us is reasonably intelligent and agreeable – she will get them to test the new forms.

Enjoy every sandwich: Chicken, peach and smokey gouda … Grilled. Maybe, I need to add a beer to that menu. That might perk me up. It sure won’t hurt.

Noah’s Ark and the Old Folk’s Asylum

No pictures today. You really don’t want to see my photos from my trek in the middle of a raging monsoon to see the some of the apartments and meet some of the residents at the old folks asylum.

The more I see of the place, the better it seems. Or maybe, maybe I am just getting used to being a potential resident of an old folk’s asylum. And every time I go there – the neighborhood is still totally strip mall – but, I am getting over it.

I brought an application home with me today.

Ok, gotta have a picture – this is just outside DC. One lady had a great collection of 20th century presidential campaign buttons. In her laundry room!

Something new today. I took three pictures today. And here they all. All within 3 blocks of home. Now, I think I’ll delete all of them. Well, maybe not the chicken.

Enjoy Every Sandwich: Grilled ham, cheese and tomato.

Mr C has finished his first week of this round of radiation. He looks the same to me. I guess the same is better than worse.

It’s that time of year again…

Carlton Long Time Ago
Carlton Long Time Ago

It is that time of year again. When I try to figure out how to digitize all my photos and albums. I do not want to move them all to the old ladies home. And, I am realistic enough to know that when I am dead nobody will want the photos.

Last summer, when I was doing this same thing – a friend reminded me that perfection is the enemy of progress or some such thing. I am toying with the idea of photographing my photographs. The trouble with flat bed scanning is DUST. I considered renting a professional Kodak photo scanner. And, just sending all the photos to one of those scan all your stuff outfits. Not one in India – one somewhere in the US. I will get a copy stand if I do the photo option.

Enjoy Every Sandwich – Today’s “sandwich” was a really nice salad of yellow fin tuna, green beans, tomato, hard boiled eggs and shaved parmesan cheese. With a roll. Sort of a tuna salad sandwich!

This photo was photographed. At ISO 1600. Proper settings and light would make for better results.

When Pig Fly…

a last on from the county fair
a last one from the county fair

The password update has begun. 1Password was selected, because the day after I started thinking about converting password managers as well as changing all my passwords, 1Password went on sale. I figured that was a sign that 1Password was the one to use.

I am starting to think positively about moving to an old folks asylum in the spring of 2016. If it is really going to happen, I’ll need to have another massive downsizing. But, that is OK. I am going to make another scouting mission to the potential asylum on Tuesday afternoon. One quarter of the residents are over 90. At that rate, I could live there 20 years. So, I’d better like it. I must think of it is my home and not a penal colony for old women!

On a more serious note… The world is not a happy place at this instant. We need more flying pigs and fewer flying projectiles.

Enjoy every sandwich: Chicken and avocado quesadilla sounds good.

40 years ago – Nixon Resigned

It must be the Arlington County Fair
It must be the Arlington County Fair

I accidentally ended up at the Arlington County Fair this afternoon. With my wonderful new camera and the macro lens. Not the right lens for a fair. But, you shoot with what you got.

Notice we have Italian, Polish, Cajun, French, and Greek greasy fried foods covered. Is this a great country or what?

And what would a country fair be without pigs?

The pig races.
The pig races.

There was also entertainment, rides, prize tomatoes… And someone won a price for growing a single stalk of corn (complete with ears) in an attractive flower pot. (No photo – wrong lens) It was utterly charming and obviously a labor of obsessive love. Even getting it to the fair must have been a challenge.

Enjoy every sandwich: Bacon, cheese and tomato. Take that piggies.

Harvard Mark I – 1944

Unknown wasp-like critter

More history. Thanks Dave – Harvard’s Mark I was “born” 70 years ago today. Just a little younger than me. Thank you Howard Aiken and you too Grace Hopper. And thanks to Harvard for showing off the leftover parts of the Mark I so elegantly.

Check out the little YouTube video. The Harvard Mark I

Votes have come in for 1password, lastpass and keeping keepass(x). The only problem with Keepass(X) is its IOS option is pretty much of a kludge.

Enjoy Every Sandwich – chicken quesadillas.

Hiroshima – 1945

We bombed Hiroshima 69 years ago today. No moral judgement. Just history.

Decided that it is time to change all of my passwords. A ***MASSIVE*** undertaking. I have used Keypass and KeypassX for years. Anyone care to recommend something “better” – before I start. Keypass isn’t totally user friendly. But, it is free and cross platform. Before that I used RoboForm. I don’t think I’ll move away from Keypass. But, I am open to suggestions.

Enjoy every sandwich – how about grilled cheese, bacon and tomato?

Déjà vu all over again

been here, done that, got the tee shirt
been here, done this, got the tee shirt

Today was the first day of Mr C’s radiation. It took 3 technicians, 2 physicists, and 1 doctor to get Carlton and the machine lined up. Oh, and one concerned wife wondering if they knew what the F they were all doing. We’ll see.

The “bad guys” in Afghanistan managed to shoot one of our generals and killed him. A few generals and admirals have died as a result of hostile actions before. Darn few, I might add. You might have to go all the way back to the American Civil War before you find one that died as a result of an enemy gunshot. Time to declare victory and leave, boys and girls.

Enjoy Every Sandwich: Turkey and Swiss. With tomatoes. Lots of tomatoes. We are in the peak of tomato season.

Playing with the camera

Falling Water
Falling Water

Playing around with the Olympus. And, the speedy shutter speed. While I was making my FitBit happy, I took the camera around to the local water features…

And then I went looking for flying critters.

Clouded Sulphur Butterfly – Colias philodice

Didn’t get any good flying shots. But, another butterfly to add to this year’s butterfly collection.

Mr C starts radiation again tomorrow morning. I am not so sure about the advisability of this round.

Enjoy Every Sandwich: Grilled ham and cheese with tomato. I guess they are called panini these days.

Just say no…

The new camera has a much faster shutter. I must experiment.

And, much higher usable ISO.
And, much higher usable ISO.

Just say no to the FitBit – today. I’ll get back with the program tomorrow. I have to. Because I got two fine new pair of jeans. Jeans that fit like a gloves. No room for expansion. The new jeans and they were new, came from the Goodwill. Our Goodwill gets shopworn, but new merchandise from The Gap, Ann Taylor and Banana Republic on a regular basis.

Enjoy Every Sandwich: Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla.

Deck Chair Potato

Vintage Arlington - This vintage scene deserved a little old-time processing.
Vintage Arlington – This vintage scene deserved a little old-time processing.

I would say that I was a couch potato this afternoon. But, we don’t have a couch. I lounged on the shaded balcony.

Carlton who is “fine”, decided to register his car for another two years.

Enjoy Every Sandwich: I have an abundance of bread products. And an underwhelming amount of stuff to put with the bread. So, we’ll have fried egg sandwiches for dinner. With tomatoes.
