List #4 – reasons to go to japan

And the elevator is where?
And the elevator is where?

Kona SeaSide regulars know that we are “elevator challenged”.

Reasons to visit japan.

  1. You can drink the water. Hey, that is a big deal to me.
  2. It is really safe – except for earthquakes, tsunamis, and atomic bombs. But, Hawai’i has earthquakes, tsunamis and active volcanoes.
  3. They have really good sushi.
  4. Japan has lots of funky electronic toys.
  5. Japan has good public transportation. Of course, I can not image how I’d know which train to get on.
  6. What’s not to love about the folks who invented instant ramen noodles.
  7. The urban young have some really strange fashion ideas.
  8. Hot baths.
  9. And, they respect old people.
  10. Finally, you would get a heap of frequent flyer miles for going.

Spam musubi, avocado and tomato for lunch. And I am finishing up the eggs for dinner tonight.

List #3 – Pre Going Home

Huge shave ice
The other day some kids were trying to finish a huge shave ice.
  1. get flat rate boxes – DONE
  2. decide what goes to Salvation Army.
  3. decide what gets mailed
    • Wetsuit
    • Mask and snorkel
    • FX01 and underwater housing and charger
    • All that personal care/bathroom stuff
  4. Boxes OK? – if not try different sizes
  5. decide what to carry home.
    • The Airness and brick
    • The 2 external drives
    • The L1 and extra lens and charger
    • The iPod and it’s charger
    • Cell Phone Charger
  6. decide what stays
  7. Anything left over?

It’s all about the stuff, isn’t it?

Shark with pad Thai sauce and cone sushi today for lunch. And a whole bunch of real 100% Kona Coffee.

Noticed that the “conservative convention” or what ever it is named Ron Paul as their choice for president in a straw vote. Things are getting stranger and stranger… May you live in interesting times. BTW – Confucius didn’t say that. I think John Kennedy did and mis-attributed the saying to the Chinese.

List #2 – The Bucket List for Travel

whale watch sign
Whale Watch
  1. Cross North America by train.
  2. Circumnavigate the globe
  3. Visit the Maldives (before they sink)
  4. Go to the Seychelles islands while I know the ambassador
  5. See the “May Day” parade in Moscow
  6. Take the train across Australia
  7. Check out Dubai or Qatar
  8. Motor around the  Marquesas Islands on the Aranui
  9. etc

It was chilly here today – so we had chili with rice underneath and avocado, sour cream and salsa on top.

iPod note to self: The first time you fire up Music after  you copy new tunes from the computer – the iPod wants to “organize” the library or some such thing. LET IT FINISH. If you don’t let it finish – it iPod will insist that it has no tunes to play. The only thing to do seems to be to reconnect the Pod to the computer and make some change to the iPod’s library – it is still there on the iPod. Disconnect the iPod, fire up Music again and this time LET IT FINISH organizing.

List #1 – What I did this winter

No picture today – still feeling too smug about getting a decade of images culled and cataloged to go out and make more.

Going to have lists for the next couple of days.

What I did this winter:

  1. Culled and cataloged a decade of images.
  2. Learned to like Lightroom.
  3. Vastly improved my open ocean swimming confidence (which might not be a good thing).
  4. Discovered that doing all the domestic chores every week – just like at home – makes the rest of the week work better. So, on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday – every week – I did laundry and defrosted the fridge and restocked the pantry.

Had albacore tuna – with lemon pepper sauce, rice, tomatoes and avocado for lunch. Ono grinds – as we say local-speak.

Microwave egg trick – It works for me. Put a slice of bread in a bowl. Add a little milk or cream to mush up the bread. Break an egg on top. Punch some holes in the yoke. Top with salsa. Cover. Nuke 2 minutes. It makes a nice alternative to peanut butter sandwich or oatmeal – which have been the major breakfast food this winter.

Bath Time

Bath Time
Bath Time for Carlton

I thought that Carlton was at his volunteer job – but when I got to the showers after my swim – I found the shower occupied by Carlton. Some days you just can not get away from Carlton.

Watched some of the Olympic Biathlon on TV this afternoon. What’s not to love. Shooting and skiing. Why isn’t it popular in america? I guess that shooting at targets is too tame for us red-blooded americans.

Also watched some of the Westminister Dog Show. Decided that if I were a dog, I  would be a member of the “Non-Sporting Group”. Of course, I would never be a thoroughbred anything. I would be a mutt.

2 weeks

Go Fly a Kite
Go fly a kite

Only two more weeks here in our winter camp. Unfortunately, I think that winter will still be going strong back in Arlington when we get back.

Good news. I think I have finished culling and cataloging all the images that I brought with me. I noticed a couple of areas of missing images. Hopefully they are back home on one of many CD/DVDs. But, I am feeling very organized. And promise to stay that way. Now, the final release of Lightroom 3.0 must work with the my LR 3.0 beta catalog.

Spam musubi for lunch today. Cone sushi and chicken katsu on tap for dinner. With avocados. I made “lemonade” with some of my very sour oranges. As I mentioned earlier – we are eating our favorite local foods for the next two weeks. I never cook local food in Arlington – it just isn’t the same.

Friday

To save money – the state of Hawai’i doesn’t hold school on Fridays. Friday is called “Furlough Friday”. Now, isn’t that a fine way to save money? Hawaii’s economy is really in the tank.

Waves Today

Splash
Waves came over the seawall today

Nothing much going on. Swimming was confined to the pool. The waves were too “junky” for surfing. So, I just had to make do with the pool, a long walk, and a couple of hours of old image culling.

Leftover rice, broccoli, cheese, tuna, tomatoes and an apple for lunch. Tomato and cheese sandwiches with bean salad is scheduled for dinner. I still have way too many sour oranges.

The Dodo (mortuary)

Dodo Mortuary
Dodo Mortuary - handy location next to the hospital

One of my favorite things – The Dodo Mortuary. I especially like that it is next door to the hospital. And, if you end up in our hospital – you might need the services of a mortuary.

Now, I wonder – is there a cemetery in Dinosaur Colorado? And if there is – is it called the Dinosaur Graveyard?

Not sorry to be missing the monster snows in the east. Note to weather goddess: Three weeks from now – I need all the snow/wind/ice/sleet winter stuff needs to be gone.

Stuck in 2002

Treme Marching Band takes a bar break

I am stuck in my 2002 photos. In honor of the Saints Superbowl win – the picture of the Treme Brass Band as it makes it’s way out of a saloon… Summer 2002 – Lowell MA

Three weeks from today we will be starting our 24 hour trek back to the east coast. Not a good thing. If the weather is still evil I’ll be calling Delta saying “Delta, I am not ready when you are…”

The food fairy “blessed” us with lots of oranges that seemed to have had lemons in their family tree. Not sure what to do with them except make orangie lemonade or would it be lemony orangeade?

Mostly Sunny

big turtle
a fine turtle swam up to me at the pier

Mostly sunny with chance of jelly fish… that is today and tomorrows weather forecast.

Enjoyed the Superbowl. Folks around here were wishing everyone a “Happy Superbowl Sunday”. My team won. Carlton’s team lost.

Had salami sandwiches and some avocado and pineapple just before the game.

And I worked on my photo culling project. I am working on 2002. I developed a “rule” – delete all photos with pictures of butts – animal or human – unless they advance the story line. Oh yes, and any picture with blown highlights.

no butt shots
No Butt Shots or Blown Highlights

This image has both – so it has been DELETED.
