Taxing Day…

Beware of Dog - Yeah Right!

I hate doing my taxes. (And Carlton’s taxes). I really hate getting the taxes started. So, to make things easier next spring – I get my taxes started today.

The Steve Jobs Memorial Nano has made it from China to Dulles Airport. So, I should be getting it soon. It is nothing special – just that I ordered it 30 minutes before the news of his passing arrived. “Nobody is promised tomorrow”.

Been Away From the Blog…

A Flu Shot Foto Op.

Been away from the blog for a few days. Spent all my computer energy designing “Flu Shot” buttons and stickers. The stickers and buttons are required by next Monday. I invoked the “If you want it bad, You get it bad” rule.

We are still wrapped in plastic.

Where's the sunrise? This morning thru the living room window.

Steve Jobs and Nano

This is a little spooky – just before the news of Steve Jobs’ passing broke I ordered a red Nano. With “Nobody is promised tomorrow” engraved on the back. I had my first iPod engraved. But, more recent iPod were just picked up at the Apple Store. For some reason – this evening “Nobody is promised tomorrow” seemed important enough to have lasered on my latest Apple product.

RIP – Steve.

Living in a submarine

We all live in a gray submarine. The building is still pretending to solve our flooding problem. Today they put gray plastic over the living room windows. Skywalking hispanics are wandering around on the ledge and I guess that management is trying to protect us from the danger if one of the windows is broken.

Carlton says it is like paying for a room at the Hilton and getting a room at the Motel 6.

Been watching the kids protesting in NYC. It is a very modest protest – but – as I recall – the Vietnam protests started small. Civil rights protests started small. Come on kids. We changed the country in the 1960’s – you can do it too.

Curled up with a nice hot computer.

There are some advantages to having a nice toasty computer. It is cold here today and the Airness – which runs about 95 degrees on the bottom – is a welcome friend.

Went to the dentist this morning – at my age “everything appears to be stable” is a good thing.

The diet is going along nicely. I think that I’ll fit into the too-short shorts that I left in Kona. Not sure about the wetsuit yet. Better keep on the Eat Half Exercise Times Two Diet.

Its Beginning to Look a Lot Like Xmas

Went to the library this morning. While waiting for the library to open, a homeless guy told me that he must have been on a great drunk – because when he went to sleep it was a warm late summer evening and when he woke up it was a chilly January morning. Cold and damp today. Got out my heavy winter sweater. Long pants too. Also wool socks.

Good thing that in four weeks we’ll be in Kona. And, most likely I’ll be grousing about our hotel room. Hopefully, my diet will have been successful and I will fit into my tight little shorts that I left in storage.

Don’t know what I did – but yesterday while I was puttering around with the Airness – I somehow or the other caused every application in the apps folder to open. It took at least 15 minutes to batter everything shut.  I tried to force quit the whole mess – but, I actually had to force quit each application. Good thing I had my games in a subfolder. At least the games stayed shut.

Still not feeling the Facebook love.

Nice Day Today

Monumental Inspection.

News Flash: It did not rain today.

I made my biennial visit to the Solar Decathlon. The houses keep getting better. I would be happy to live in at least half of them. But, my favorite was the City College of NY entry. It is a city house. Designed to be taken up the freight elevator and constructed on an urban roof top.

And, I checked out the engineers/climbers working on the Monument.

Enough rain already.

Arlington has turned into a mushroom farm.

Maybe the rain will stop tomorrow. The last day of September. The last day of the monsoon. Works for me.

I am afraid to even consider the Kindle Fire. It looks like a shopping machine to me. But the Kindle Touch seems pretty sweet.

Sometimes the Eat Half as Much diet is pretty silly. This morning I decided that a Luna Bar was what I wanted for breakfast. Eat Half as Much means I got half a Luna Bar. I guess I’ll have the other half tomorrow. Or – do I only get half of the half.

Some progress on the mental/moral/physical funk state…

Watching climbers check the Washington Monument from our living room.

Lots of fun watching the climbers on the Monument. They are easy to see with my spotting scope, but 300 mm lens is not long enough to show  the climbers. Do I need a 600 mm lens? Well, I’d have to take the scope off the tripod – so I don’t think a need 600 mm. I am way too old to hand hold 600 mm.

Fun fact – there are 4 climbers and 2 are women. In the last century, I posted this story about women climbers on “the world wide web”. MANLESS ASCENT OF DEVILS TOWER   The candy bars are a little cheesy – but – that was pretty cool in 1998.

Now on the mental/moral/physical funk.

  1. No action yet. Still in denial.
  2. Losing 10 pounds. Well, I isn’t that bad. It is only 5 pounds. Diet is underway. Eat 1/2 as much – exercise 2x as much. So far so good on this front.
  3. The economy and my equity portfolio is going south again. So, this is happened before.
  4. And the leaky apartment didn’t help anything. Well it is a rental leaky apartment.

Still in mental/moral/physical funk

OK, when???

Don’t understand this funk. I think these might be contributing problems.

  1. I really need to get an appointment to get more blood pressure drugs. I ran out of drugs about July 4th. Wait, what if I ran out of illegal drugs? Wouldn’t I get them going again. But I am stuck. Everyday that I don’t do something it gets harder to pick up the phone and make the appointment and then go endure the grief about not taking the drugs and not getting my mammogram and not taking statins. Last time I went to the doctor, I ending up going thru a bunch of tests – both painful and expensive – for nothing. Well, it was just to prevent me from suing the doctor if it had been something. And, all I wanted then was more BP drugs. Nope, I don’t know what my BP is. Been afraid to check it. Don’t ask questions you don’t want answers to.
  2. I must lose 10 pounds. Or, I will not fit into my wetsuit. Now, this is serious. I will not buy I new wetsuit.
  3. The economy and my equity portfolio is going south again.
  4. And the leaky apartment didn’t help anything.

Shameless self serving post

I have been spending way to much money and time at Shutterfly. I don’t make cards very often. But, Mr C – who doesn’t do email – still uses cards and he is too cheap to buy them. Shutterfly said I could have 10 cards for free if I would post a link on my blog. So… here it is.

Stop the country. I want to get off.

Today I am wanting to immigrate. Immigrate to anywhere. Hopefully anywhere short on religious zealots of any ilk. Anywhere that has a functional government. Anywhere where the dysfunctional government does not buy $16 muffins with my tax money. Now, I like muffins. But no muffin is worth $16.

But, alas, I am too old and/or too poor to immigrate to New Zealand. Canada and Australia are questionable. It has to be somewhere that will take Mr C. And it has to be somewhere he would be willing to go. NZ would be his first choice. Followed by Vancouver/Victoria Canada.

Tomorrow is my day off from “work”. I was thinking about upgrading to OS/X Lion. But, I decided that what I have works great. And, I have snail internet. So, I’ll operate in “Don’t Fix What Ain’t Broke” mode.
