Gray Hairstreak Butterfly

Nice cool cloudy today. Went butterfly hunting. Found the gray hairstreak.

Made some progress on the Japan image culling project. Down to 1,662.

Spent too much time thinking about the economy today. I think that Carlton and I will be OK. After all, we don’t have that long to go. 20 years max.  We’ll survive deflation better than inflation. Our biggest risk would be massive defaults in the bond market. If I were middle aged, I would be very worried. And, if I were young – I’d come up with Plan B. Maybe, select a nice 25 acres of land and learn how to be self sufficient. In my youth, we figured that the right 10 acres could support you nicely.

While I am at it, why don’t we worry about that great right wing boogieman, an EMP or my favorite worst case – a solar storm like the one in the late summer of 1859. Make a Faraday cage. But, what would you do with what you saved?

More Processing/Culling

This is the first serious cute train car that we encountered.

Today’s image starting count: 1,725

1830 hours – I have worked all day on this – how can I be down to 1,711. Not doing too very good.

1935 hours – 1,689 is the count now.

Having been out of the loop, I did not know until this morning that S. Palin is scheduled to give a speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28 – the 47th anniversary of MLK’s “I have a dream…”. I have a nightmare.

I am setting out on a hour of serious culling of my Japanese images. Current count 2196. Will report back at 9:45 with an updated count. For now the objective is to stay on task. Updated count 2124. Not a lot of progress …

Sick Call

We still have our colds. But, I was well enough to talk to the grocery this morning. Now, when I got there… I couldn’t figure out what to buy.

I got reservations at a hotel over the Kyoto Train Station for mid-July. There are lots of interesting lodging options in Kyoto. We are going to be in Kyoto during a major festival – I figured that would be interesting enough – lodging will be upmarket generic. And, located in a favorite travel hotel location – at the RR station.

Seems that some where along the way I lot my photographs from Hawaii for 2007 and 2008. I guess I had them on DVDs or CDs and accidentally pitched them. It is no big loss. But makes me feel pretty silly.

Returning to the living…

I am returning to life.

  • Opened all 4 months of mail. Well, any that deserved opening. And sorted it into piles. That is a start.
  • I considered going outside. Didn’t go – but I thought about it.
  • Downloading the October release of Ubuntu at this instant. Most likely I’ll just wait until 10.4 comes out in a couple of months.
  • Did some thinking about the proposed month in Japan adventure.

While I was madly cataloging images  in Hawaii – I noticed that parts of 2007-2008 seem to be missing. These images would have been on the HP Vista Whore machine. Will have to look thru the backup DVDs. I think I have already tossed some of them. Oh well, I have enough images. Organized images.

Mostly Sunny

Mostly sunny with chance of jelly fish… that is today and tomorrows weather forecast.

Enjoyed the Superbowl. Folks around here were wishing everyone a “Happy Superbowl Sunday”. My team won. Carlton’s team lost.

Had salami sandwiches and some avocado and pineapple just before the game.

And I worked on my photo culling project. I am working on 2002. I developed a “rule” – delete all photos with pictures of butts – animal or human – unless they advance the story line. Oh yes, and any picture with blown highlights.

This image has both – so it has been DELETED.

New Year’s Eve

carlton cartoon

This is one of my all time favorite cartoons. Wish I could run down a better version of it. And, it does describe our New Year’s Eve. Very low key. Not even any civic fireworks this year. No money.

Still working on 2003

Still culling my way thru 2003. Been wearing out the Delete key. Which is a good thing.

On the food front, the supply of meatballs has been exhausted. Sort of sad to see them go. I’d become rather fond of the meatballs.

We had our New Year’s eve feast at 2 PM. Shark, sushi, oranges and avocado. Sandwiches on tap for dinner.

I am sort of easing my way out of the 2009 and into 2010. Carlton worked half day at the Palace. He is easing into 2010 as well. He is watching VaTech in the Fried Chicken Bowl. Don’t you wish some cereal company or toilet bowl cleaner or even a soup company would sponsor a bowl game?

Guess what? Carlton and I have been together 31 years.

Did a bunch of deleting today. I really have learned to enjoy Lightroom and will buy a copy when LR 3.0 is released. But, if LR 3.0 will not read the LR 3.0 Beta catalog – I’ll be hating life.

Getting the images from the first decade of the 21st century done is New Years Resolution #1.

Resolution #2 is to change my “important” password. I have used the same “important” password for too long. I am happy with Keypass – so that shouldn’t be too hard. I just have to come up with a new “important” password. Rememberable but not too hackable.

I have an idea about “body scanners” for airlines. First, if “they” want to scan me – have at it, boys. Heck, they could strip search me. But, PLEASE, don’t make me stay in my seat with my hands on the arm rests – without my iPod, book, snacks, and blanket. Anyone who doesn’t want to be scanned could be handcuffed.

What was I doing?

almost 7,000 pictures from 2003

What was I doing in 2003? Why did I take 6,719 pictures? Surely some must be dupes. And this doesn’t include the 2,000 plus fish pictures that I have already disposed of.

I have learned how to move folders from my external drive to the Airness’s small drive and back to the external drive after the images have been culled and cataloged. This makes processing much quicker. And, I don’t have to have an external drive lashed to the computer.

A couple more from xmas day

The xmas day luau in Waimea

Today – December 28, 2009 I finish sorting, cataloging, culling my fish photographs from 2003. Now that is progress. I really do intend to have the decade all done by the time we head for home in 9 weeks.

Speaking of the end of the decade. The first decade of the 21st century has been rather crappy, hasn’t it? Let’s see, we eased into the decade with the dot-com bust and the Y2K scare. Then we had 911, antrax, the sniper, Katrina, Enron, Bernie Ebbers, Bird Flu, Pig Flu, The Obesity Epidemic, “reality” TV, Fox “News”, Mr Madoff, the current economic melt down and the jobless “recovery”.

Fish Again

Juvenile Yellowtail Coris
Juvenile Yellowtail Coris

Took the One Buck Bus 5 miles south this morning for some photography. I came back with some rather nice fishy fotos. Which I will have all processed, culled and cataloged before the day is over. I am trying to do something about my mountain of digital images. At least I am trying to keep it from getting worse. I came home with 140 photos and now have only 38.

Meatballs again today. This time I nuked up some apples and frozen meatballs. With cheese on top. Also avocado. The food fairy provided a bunch of desserts and some bananas. Is bananas and chocolate cake with peanut butter icing dinner? It might be in my house today.

Continuing with revisiting the post-apocalyptic genre – I just started on Earth Abides, 1949 George Stewart. I read it when I was a kid and still remember parts of it. In the 50’s we  worried about being nuked. But in this book, we were all taken out by a world-wide killer measles epidemic. What you worry about is never what gets you. Something will always get you. But, it isn’t what you worried about.

Once again I am seeking The Grail, ie, all my digital images culled, sorted and cataloged. To that end, I am copying all my still un-processed images to the “spare” 500 gig usb drive. Off it will go to Hawaii with me. You know the rest… In my copious spare time – I’ll get culling, sorting and cataloging. And when I get back to Arlington – everything will be done. When pigs fly!

And, I forgot to wish the internet a very happy 40th birthday yesterday. And here is a fine “history of the internet slideshow from across the pond”
